  • When | November–March
  • Duration | 4 Days - 3 Nights

Day 1: King George Island

ANTARCTIC ARRIVAL | FILDES BAY | WELCOME ABOARD

Fly from Punta Arenas across the Drake Passage to King George Island, with the flight typically taking around two hours. After landing, transfer toward Fildes Bay and board the yacht by Zodiac, beginning the charter directly within the South Shetland Islands rather than spending days crossing open ocean.

Settle into the yacht and begin cruising through the surrounding polar landscape, watching for seabirds, seals and floating ice. Depending on flight timing and conditions, the afternoon may include a short Zodiac excursion before the first dinner onboard surrounded by glaciers and snow-covered mountains.

Day 2: Barrientos Island

GENTOO PENGUINS | CHINSTRAP COLONIES | FINAL WILDLIFE WATCH

Cruise to Barrientos Island in the Aitcho Islands for the final wildlife experience. The island supports breeding gentoo and chinstrap penguins, southern giant petrels and several seal species, creating an excellent final opportunity for photography and guided observation ashore.

After the Zodiac excursion, return toward King George Island for disembarkation and the flight back to Punta Arenas. Flight timing is dependent on Antarctic weather, so any four-day programme should include flexibility and contingency arrangements on the Chilean side.

Day 3: Half Moon Island

CHINSTRAP PENGUINS | ZODIAC LANDING | POLAR WILDLIFE

Cruise toward Half Moon Island, a small crescent-shaped island between Greenwich and Livingston islands. Its wildlife includes breeding chinstrap penguins, Antarctic terns and storm petrels, while Weddell and fur seals regularly haul out around the shoreline.

Land by Zodiac where conditions permit and explore with experienced polar guides, following designated visitor routes and allowing wildlife complete right-of-way. Return to the yacht for an afternoon of scenic cruising among ice and mountainous island landscapes before continuing toward the next overnight position.

ZODIAC EXPLORATION | WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY | POLAR HIKING

Antarctica is strongest as an expedition charter, with days shaped around Zodiac cruising, guided landings, penguin and seal observation, iceberg photography and short hikes where site regulations and conditions permit. All shore activities must follow Antarctic Treaty visitor guidelines, including keeping appropriate distances from wildlife and avoiding interference with scientific research. Optional premium additions may include a private polar naturalist, professional wildlife photographer, specialist ornithologist, expedition videographer or dedicated photography Zodiac. Kayaking may also be possible with appropriately equipped operators and suitable weather, but should never be guaranteed in advance.

Antarctica: 4 Day South Shetlands Escape Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to charter here?

+

The principal yacht season runs from November through March, during the austral summer when the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands are most accessible to vessels.

Where do charters depart from?

+

For a four-day itinerary, guests should fly from Punta Arenas, Chile, to King George Island and join a yacht already positioned in Antarctica. Established air-cruise programmes make this flight in approximately two hours.

What can be experienced in this region?

+

Guests can experience penguin colonies, seals, glaciers, icebergs, Zodiac excursions, volcanic landscapes at Deception Island and wildlife-rich islands throughout the South Shetlands. Half Moon and Barrientos islands are both managed Antarctic visitor sites with significant penguin populations.

Who is this destination suited for?

+

This itinerary is best suited to adventurous luxury travellers, couples, families with older children, photographers and wildlife enthusiasts who want an intense introduction to Antarctica without spending several days crossing the Drake Passage.

What is a typical itinerary like?

+

Unlike a conventional yacht charter, Antarctic days are dictated by weather, ice, wildlife and landing conditions. The expedition team normally assesses conditions each morning and chooses the safest and most rewarding combination of cruising, Zodiac excursions and shore landings.

What should be considered before booking?

+

A four-day Antarctica charter requires significant flexibility. Flights to King George Island are weather-dependent, yacht operations must meet Antarctic Treaty and national-authority requirements, and shore sites have specific visitor rules and environmental protections. IAATO advises yacht expeditions to prepare for rapidly changing Antarctic weather and carefully plan all operations.
