6 Day Loyalty Islands Voyage
The Loyalty Islands offer a completely different New Caledonia yacht experience. Situated east of Grande Terre, Maré, Lifou and Ouvéa combine raised coral landscapes, dramatic cliffs, long beaches, traditional Kanak communities and remarkably preserved marine environments. Maré is characterised by rugged basalt and coral scenery, Lifou by cliffs, forests and bays, while Ouvéa surrounds a UNESCO-listed lagoon with an exceptionally long ribbon of sand.
This six-day route is designed as a one-way northbound expedition, beginning on Maré before crossing to Lifou and finally Ouvéa. Unlike the five-day Southern Lagoon itinerary, the emphasis is on cultural encounters, open-water passages and remote island landscapes rather than frequent reef-islet stops.
- Where | Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia
- When | May-October
- Duration | 6 Days - 5 Nights
- Departs | Tadine Bay, Maré
- Concludes | Fayaoué, Ouvéa
Day 1: Tadine Bay, Maré
MARÉ ARRIVAL | KANAK CULTURE | WILD COASTLINE
Arrive on Maré by pre-arranged air transfer and join the yacht in Tadine Bay, where anchoring is permitted subject to local navigation considerations and customary procedures. Maré is regarded as the wildest of the Loyalty Islands, with forests, cliffs, coves and long beaches defining its coastal landscape.
Spend the afternoon settling aboard and exploring the nearby shore with an appropriate local guide. A customary welcome can provide valuable context for understanding the island’s Kanak traditions before the yacht begins its northbound journey.
Day 2: Wabao Bay, Maré
SECLUDED BAY | CORAL LANDSCAPES | ISLAND CULTURE
Cruise around Maré toward Wabao Bay, one of several beautiful stretches of coastline where pale sand, coral formations and columnar pines meet the sea. The wider Cap Wabao area also provides access to guided walking routes and viewpoints.
Spend the afternoon swimming, tendering along the coast or going ashore for a locally guided excursion. Return aboard for dinner before preparing for the following day’s passage toward Lifou.
Day 3: Wé, Lifou
INTER-ISLAND PASSAGE | LIFOU ARRIVAL | MARINA STOP
Make the open-water passage north toward Lifou and arrive at Wé, the principal marine gateway for yachts visiting the Loyalty Islands. Current rules require sailing validation through Wé Marina before visiting Lifou, Maré or Ouvéa.
Spend the afternoon ashore or enjoy a quieter evening aboard after the passage. Lifou is the largest Loyalty Island and combines dramatic fossil-coral cliffs, forests, caves, beaches and strong connections to Kanak culture.
Day 4: Easo & Sandalwood Bay
SANDALWOOD BAY | CLIFF VIEWS | CULTURAL DISCOVERY
Cruise around Lifou toward Easo on Sandalwood Bay. The bay extends along much of Lifou’s western coast and has a long connection with sandalwood trading and whaling history, while Easo now provides a base for cultural excursions and local experiences.
Guests can visit local communities, walk toward the Notre-Dame de Lourdes viewpoint or explore the surrounding shoreline. Any anchoring and shore access should follow local authorisation and customary protocols.
Day 5: Southern Pleiades, Ouvéa
CORAL ISLETS | MANTA RAYS | SNORKELLING
Cross toward Ouvéa and spend the day among the Southern Pleiades, a group of reef-fringed islets south of the main atoll. Local guided boat excursions explore Motu Gee and Motu Gece, with opportunities for snorkelling and encounters with turtles, manta rays and diverse reef life.
The Pleiades sit within Ouvéa’s World Heritage-listed lagoon landscape and offer one of the strongest marine experiences of the itinerary. Activities should be coordinated with local guides and conducted according to customary and environmental requirements.
Day 6: Fayaoué, Ouvéa
LONG BEACH | KANAK HERITAGE | FINAL ISLAND DAY
Conclude your island-hopping journey in Fayaoué, on the leeward coast of Ouvéa, where an extraordinary stretch of white sand and turquoise lagoon waters provides a beautiful setting for your final morning. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast overlooking the sea, take a refreshing swim or explore the island's peaceful coastline before preparing for departure.
After disembarkation, transfer to Ouvéa Airport for your return flight to Maré, bringing your six-day journey through New Caledonia's Loyalty Islands to a close. Flight arrangements should be confirmed in advance, as schedules and connections may vary.
Spend the morning ashore with a local guide, arrange a cultural experience or simply enjoy breakfast and a final swim before disembarkation. Current boating guidance recommends anchoring near Fayaoué’s gendarmerie or the Mouli chiefdom subject to customary agreements, making advance coordination essential.

New Caledonia: 6 Day Loyalty Islands Voyage Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to charter here?
+Late April through mid-November is the principal sailing period for New Caledonia, with May through October providing a practical core season for this itinerary. The cyclone-prone summer months are less favourable for a route requiring open-water passages.
Where do charters depart from?
+This itinerary begins at Tadine Bay on Maré, with guests arriving by a pre-arranged domestic flight before joining the yacht. Maré is connected to Nouméa by both air and ferry services.
What can be experienced in this region?
+Guests can experience Maré’s rugged coastline, Lifou’s cliffs and cultural communities, Ouvéa’s long beaches, the Southern Pleiades, reef wildlife and a variety of locally guided Kanak experiences.
Who is this destination suited for?
+This itinerary is best suited to adventurous couples, culturally curious travellers, experienced charter guests, photographers and families comfortable with longer inter-island passages.
What is a typical itinerary like?
+The route combines longer passages between islands with slower days devoted to beaches, snorkelling, guided walks and cultural visits. Unlike a lagoon-only charter, the journey itself forms an important part of the experience.
What should be considered before booking?
+The Loyalty Islands require more advance planning than the Southern Lagoon. All yacht visits to Maré, Lifou and Ouvéa currently require validation through Wé Marina, and anchoring outside the marina requires an application generally submitted one to two weeks beforehand. Local customary permission is also necessary at many anchorages and for access to tribal land.
