SRI LANKA: 5 Day Coastal Adventure
Asia & Indian Ocean
Sri Lanka
5 Day Coastal Adventure
Sri Lanka’s southern coastline combines historic ports, palm-fringed beaches, fishing communities and warm Indian Ocean waters within a relatively compact cruising region. Galle provides an especially practical starting point because its natural harbour supports pleasure yachts, while destinations farther east such as Unawatuna, Koggala, Mirissa and Tangalle are recognised by Sri Lanka Tourism for beaches and watersports.
This five-day point-to-point itinerary moves steadily east from Galle to Tangalle without retracing the same destinations. Heritage walks, snorkelling, local fishing traditions, marine-wildlife opportunities and relaxed beach time give each day a different character while keeping the journey firmly connected to the coast.

Day 1: Galle
HISTORIC FORT | NATURAL HARBOUR | WELCOME ABOARD
Board the yacht in Galle, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest natural harbours and the country’s principal port with facilities for pleasure yachts. Begin with a relaxed introduction to the coast before heading ashore to explore Galle Fort, the UNESCO-listed fortified city where European architecture and South Asian traditions meet.
Return aboard for sunset drinks and dinner, with the historic coastline providing an atmospheric start to the charter.
Day 2: Unawatuna
BEACHES | SNORKELLING | COASTAL EXPLORATION
Cruise east to Unawatuna for a day centred on swimming and watersports. Sri Lanka Tourism lists Unawatuna among the south coast’s principal beach destinations and identifies the wider area as a strong location for activities such as snorkelling, diving and sailing.
Guests can explore ashore, snorkel in suitable conditions or travel by tender toward quieter stretches of coastline. Nearby Jungle Beach and Rumassala provide an optional nature-focused shore experience, with coral habitat and rich biodiversity adding variety to the day.
Day 3: Koggala
STILT FISHING | COASTAL CULTURE | LONG BEACHES
Continue east to Koggala, where Sri Lanka’s coastal traditions become a stronger part of the journey. Koggala Beach is one of the island’s longer beaches and is associated with both marine turtles and the traditional practice of stilt fishing.
Spend the afternoon swimming or paddleboarding before going ashore for a locally guided cultural experience. A private visit around the wider Koggala area can add context to the fishing traditions and everyday coastal life before guests return to the yacht for dinner.
Day 4: Mirissa
MARINE WILDLIFE | SAILING | BEACH LIFE
Cruise toward Mirissa, one of Sri Lanka’s established sailing and marine-wildlife destinations. Sri Lanka Tourism identifies Mirissa as an important south-coast fishing port and a major base for whale watching, while sailing charters operate from the area during the southern season.
Where conditions and responsible wildlife-viewing practices allow, spend the morning searching for whales and dolphins with an experienced naturalist. The remainder of the day can be devoted to swimming, paddleboarding or exploring the waterfront before a final night at sea.
Day 5: Tangalle
QUIET SHORES | COASTAL SCENERY | DISEMBARKATION
Continue east toward Tangalle, one of the southern beach destinations highlighted by Sri Lanka Tourism. Compared with the busier areas closer to Galle and Mirissa, the surrounding coastline provides a fittingly slower conclusion to the charter.
Enjoy breakfast and a final morning on the water before disembarking through locally arranged tender and shore-transfer logistics, subject to sea conditions and the yacht’s operating requirements. Guests can continue inland or extend their stay along Sri Lanka’s southern coast.

SNORKELLING | MARINE WILDLIFE | CULTURAL DISCOVERY
The southern route lends itself to swimming, snorkelling, paddleboarding, sailing, surfing, wildlife observation and guided coastal exploration. Sri Lanka Tourism specifically identifies Galle, Unawatuna, Koggala and Tangalle among the country’s southern watersports destinations. Optional premium additions may include a private Galle Fort historian, marine naturalist, surf instructor, underwater photographer, Sri Lankan chef experience, specialist fishing excursion or post-charter wildlife safari.
Sri Lanka: 5 Day Coastal Adventure Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to charter here?
+November through March is the strongest general period because Sri Lanka’s northeast monsoon typically leaves the south and southwest coast sunnier and the sea calmer.
Where do charters depart from?
+This itinerary begins in Galle, whose natural harbour provides facilities for pleasure yachts and is one of Sri Lanka’s principal maritime gateways.
What can be experienced in this region?
+Guests can combine Galle’s historic architecture with southern beaches, snorkelling, traditional fishing culture, marine wildlife and relaxed coastal towns such as Mirissa and Tangalle.
Who is this destination suited for?
+The route works especially well for couples, families and travellers who want culture and wildlife alongside a relaxed yacht experience rather than spending every day exclusively offshore.
What is a typical itinerary like?
+Days combine relatively short coastal passages with swimming, shore visits, watersports and dining aboard, allowing the yacht to progress east without repeating destinations.
What should be considered before booking?
+The south coast remains exposed to the Indian Ocean, so swell, wind and local landing conditions can influence where the yacht can safely anchor or transfer guests ashore. The exact route and overnight positions should therefore remain at the captain’s discretion.
