6 Day Reefs & Bays Discovery
Sri Lanka’s east coast creates a noticeably different yacht experience from the south, combining Trincomalee’s immense natural harbour with coral reefs, quieter beaches, shallow bays and increasingly open stretches of coastline farther south. Sri Lanka Tourism specifically describes the east coast as well suited to exploring by boat, including sailing between beaches and snorkelling around Pigeon Island.
This six-day round trip begins and ends in Trincomalee, keeping the journey within the sheltered waters between Koddiyar Bay and Nilaveli. Short daily passages leave more time for whale watching, reef snorkelling at Pigeon Island, the clifftop Koneswaram Temple and quiet beach anchorages, rather than long days at sea.

Day 1: Trincomalee
NATURAL HARBOUR | CULTURAL HERITAGE | WELCOME ABOARD
Board the yacht in Trincomalee, whose vast natural harbour has played an important maritime role through centuries of Portuguese, Dutch, French and British presence. The harbour remains one of Sri Lanka’s key eastern maritime gateways.
Spend the afternoon cruising inside the protected harbour or go ashore to explore Fort Frederick and the wider peninsula before returning for dinner aboard. This gentle first day prepares guests for the more open coastal passages ahead.
Day 2: Uppuveli
WHALE WATCHING | BEACH DAY | SHORE EXCURSIONS
Leave the harbour early for the deep water off Trincomalee, where blue and sperm whales are seen in season. Sightings are never guaranteed, and the crew will advise on the best timing. Then continue the short distance north to anchor off Uppuveli’s long sandy beach.
In the afternoon, guests may go ashore to visit the Trincomalee War Cemetery or the Kanniya hot wells inland. Or they can simply swim and relax aboard before a quiet evening at anchor.
Day 3: Pigeon Island
CORAL REEF | SNORKELLING | MARINE PARK
Cruise north toward Pigeon Island National Park, a two-island protected area off Nilaveli whose larger island is fringed by coral reef. Boat access from the Nilaveli coast is the established way to reach the national park.
Spend the day snorkelling and observing reef life with a qualified local guide. Because the island is a protected national park, access, fees, visitor rules and permitted activities should be confirmed before arrival.
Day 4: Swami Rock
CLIFFTOP TEMPLE | DIVING | COASTAL SCENERY
Turn south along the coast to Swami Rock, the dramatic headland at the tip of the Fort Frederick peninsula, crowned by the Koneswaram Temple. Viewed from the water, the cliffs make one of the most striking sights on Sri Lanka’s east coast.
Certified divers may explore the waters beneath the headland with a local dive operator, while others visit Koneswaram ashore. Weather permitting, there is also a second chance to look for whales in the deep water just offshore.
Day 5: Marble Beach
SHELTERED BAY | SWIMMING | COASTAL RELAXATION
Turn south toward Marble Beach near Trincomalee for a slower day following the reef exploration at Pigeon Island. The beach sits within the broader Trincomalee coastline and is surrounded by green hills, with an established beachfront resort operated by the Sri Lanka Air Force.
Spend the afternoon swimming, paddleboarding or enjoying a leisurely lunch aboard before preparing for the longer southbound passage toward the Batticaloa region.
Day 6: Trincomalee
HARBOUR RETURN | FAREWELL BREAKFAST | DISEMBARKATION
Enjoy a final breakfast aboard before the short cruise back across the bay to Trincomalee Harbour. Returning to the departure port makes for a simple, reliable disembarkation, with onward road transfers or domestic flight connections arranged in advance.
Spend the afternoon swimming, paddleboarding and exploring ashore. After several more expedition-style days, Pasikuda provides an opportunity for relaxed beach time and refined dining before continuing farther south.

SNORKELLING
Pigeon Island National Park, off Nilaveli, is the reef highlight of the week. Its larger island is fringed by coral, where guests may see reef fish, turtles and blacktip reef sharks in clear, shallow water. Access and permitted activities follow national park rules, and snorkelling is led by a qualified local guide.
PADDLEBOARDING
The sheltered waters of Koddiyar Bay and the calm beach anchorages at Marble Beach and Uppuveli are ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking and swimming straight from the yacht. They suit relaxed mornings and late-afternoon paddles before dinner aboard.
WHALE WATCHING
Deep water lies close to shore off Trincomalee, and blue and sperm whales are seen there in season. The yacht can head out early in the morning to look for them, with the crew advising on timing and conditions. Sightings are never guaranteed.
