5 Day Beaches & Island Traditions
Savai‘i offers a quieter and more elemental side of Samoa, with volcanic landscapes, traditional villages, uncrowded beaches and a coastline suited to travellers who want to move beyond the country’s more populated island. Samoa Tourism highlights Savai‘i for its lava fields, caves, waterfalls and secluded swimming and snorkelling areas.
This five-day route follows Savai‘i progressively from its eastern gateway at Salelologa toward Lano, Saleaula, Manase and Asau. The experience shifts from beach cruising to volcanic history and finally to the quieter northwestern coast.
- Where | Savai‘i
- When | May–October
- Duration | 5 Days - 4 Nights
- Departs | Salelologa
- Concludes | Asau
Day 1: Salelologa
SAVAI‘I GATEWAY | LOCAL MARKET | WELCOME ABOARD
Begin the charter at Salelologa, Savai‘i’s principal ferry gateway and one of the island’s main commercial centres. The local market near the wharf offers an easy opportunity to provision with fruit, local foods and crafts before boarding.
Spend the afternoon cruising away from the busier eastern coast before settling into the rhythm of Savai‘i.
Day 2: Lano
WHITE-SAND BEACH | SNORKELLING | COASTAL RELAXATION
Continue along the coast toward Lano, known for its broad beachfront and strong swimming and snorkelling opportunities. Samoa Tourism lists Lano among Savai‘i’s popular swimming, snorkelling and surfing areas.
Spend the day swimming, kayaking or enjoying a relaxed beach visit before dinner onboard.
Day 3: Saleaula
LAVA FIELDS | VOLCANIC HISTORY | CULTURAL LANDSCAPE
Cruise onward toward the Saleaula area and go ashore for a guided visit to the famous lava fields. The early-20th-century eruption of Mt Matavanu buried several villages, leaving behind hardened lava, partially buried structures and one of Samoa’s most striking geological sites.
Return to the coast for an afternoon swim or tender excursion before continuing to a suitable overnight position.
Day 4: Manase
BEACH LIFE | SEA TURTLES | ISLAND SUNSET
Continue west to Manase on Savai‘i’s north coast. The village is known for its sandy beach, snorkelling and opportunities to see turtles, while several beachfront properties make it possible to arrange lunch or a cultural evening ashore.
Spend the afternoon on the water before enjoying sunset from the yacht.
Day 5: Asau
SHELTERED HARBOUR | FISHING | FINAL COASTAL DAY
Finish the itinerary at Asau on Savai‘i’s northwest coast. Samoa’s official sailing guidance identifies Asau as an anchorage on Savai‘i, making it the most practical ending point for this progressive route.
Enjoy a final morning of snorkelling, fishing or paddleboarding within the wider harbour area before disembarkation and a pre-arranged road transfer. Local operators around Asau also offer fishing, snorkelling and sunset boat experiences.
