6 Day Hawkesbury River Escape
This six-day itinerary moves beyond Sydney Harbour for a more exploratory charter, following the coast north toward Palm Beach before entering Pittwater, Broken Bay and the waterways of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Here, urban Sydney gives way to steep sandstone escarpments, eucalyptus bushland, winding creeks and secluded waterfronts.
The journey continues into Cowan Water and the Hawkesbury River before returning to Sydney, creating a stronger sense of passage than the five-day harbour itinerary. The Hawkesbury extends inland from Broken Bay and supports kayaking and other water-based experiences, while Ku-ring-gai Chase surrounds guests with waterways, rocky cliffs, mangroves, rainforest and culturally significant Aboriginal sites.
- Where | Sydney
- When | October–April
- Duration | 6 Days - 5 Nights
- Departs | Sydney Harbour
- Concludes | Sydney
Day 1: Sydney Harbour
CITY ICONS | HARBOUR CRUISING | DEPARTURE NORTH
Board in Sydney and begin with a relaxed introduction to the harbour, passing the city’s famous waterfront before moving toward the eastern reaches of the harbour.
Rather than spending the entire charter within Sydney, this first day establishes the transition from city to wilderness that defines the itinerary. The captain can position the yacht for the following day’s coastal passage according to forecast conditions and harbour traffic.
Day 2: Palm Beach & Pittwater
COASTAL PASSAGE | PALM BEACH | PITTWATER
When conditions permit, cruise north along the coast toward Broken Bay and Palm Beach. Positioned between Pittwater, the Pacific and Broken Bay, Palm Beach is naturally connected to sailing, swimming and life on the water.
Enter the protected waters of Pittwater for a contrasting afternoon of swimming, paddleboarding, tender exploration or lunch onboard surrounded by forested shorelines. This marks the beginning of the itinerary’s more secluded cruising phase.
Day 3: Cowan Water & Refuge Bay
SECLUDED WATERWAYS | KAYAKING | QUIET ANCHORAGES
Move deeper into the waterways around Cowan Creek and Refuge Bay for one of the charter’s quietest days. Forested escarpments replace city skylines, making the area particularly appealing for tender exploration, kayaking, photography and extended lunches onboard.
Walking routes in Ku-ring-gai Chase overlook both Cowan Creek and Refuge Bay, illustrating how deeply these waterways cut into the surrounding bushland. Overnight arrangements should be selected by the captain for the yacht’s size, permitted use and prevailing conditions; NPWS courtesy moorings in Cowan Waters have specific vessel and usage restrictions.
Day 4: Hawkesbury River
RIVER LANDSCAPES | WATERFRONT DISCOVERY | SLOW CRUISING
Continue into the Hawkesbury, where the experience shifts again from open harbour and coastal cruising to a broad river landscape. The Hawkesbury runs inland from Broken Bay and is known for boating, kayaking and other water-based activities.
Spend the day cruising at an unhurried pace, exploring by tender or kayak and enjoying the sense of isolation created by the river’s forested surroundings. The final evening can be spent in a suitable sheltered location chosen according to vessel requirements and the following day’s return conditions.
Day 5: The Basin & West Head
NATIONAL PARK | ABORIGINAL HERITAGE | BUSH & BEACH
Spend the day exploring the western side of Pittwater within Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. The park combines waterways, eucalyptus forest, sandstone cliffs, mangroves and significant Aboriginal heritage, offering a remarkable wilderness setting within greater Sydney.
Go ashore around The Basin or arrange a guided cultural or bushwalking experience, while West Head provides elevated views across Pittwater and Barrenjoey Head. Final landing points depend on yacht operations, park access and local conditions.
Day 6: Sydney
BROKEN BAY | COASTAL RETURN | SYDNEY SKYLINE
Begin the return toward Broken Bay and the coast before making the passage south to Sydney. The contrast is one of the itinerary’s strengths: remote river and national-park scenery gradually gives way to the headlands and unmistakable skyline of Sydney Harbour.
Arrive back in Sydney for disembarkation. As with the outbound passage, the timing of the coastal leg remains weather-dependent and entirely at the captain’s discretion, with NSW boating maps and current marine conditions forming part of safe voyage planning.
